Mac Miller & Wiz Khalifa Make History In Their Hometown

Mac Miller & Wiz Khalifa brought their “Under The Influence of Music” tour to their hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday night by performing at the First Niagara Pavilion. Before I get into writing my review for the show I would like to explain some background on the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene over the past handful of years. Pittsburgh has never been a hip-hop hot bed, but over the past few years we have seen our fair share of big tours pass through. I personally have been in attendance for Lil Wayne twice and Drake once at the First Niagara Pavilion and none of them performed in front of the crowd we saw for Mac & Wiz. Kanye West & Jay-z brought their ‘Watch The Throne’ tour to Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center last fall and performed in front of a less than sold out crowd. For The Under The Influence tour Mac & Wiz brought in over 20,000 spectators (may have been closer to 25,000). None of the others have been able to touch these numbers which probably makes this show the most sold hip-hop event ever in our city. That is why I say in the title that the duo “make history in their hometown”.

Now onto the review. Upon arriving at the venue around 2 pm, my friends and I were greeted by hundreds of cars stretched up and down the road engaging in good pre concert tailgates since the parking lots did not open until 3 pm. When the lots did open the party was really on as thousands of fans busted out alcohol and got ‘under the influence’ while waiting for the show to start.

Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller Devise Backstage Pranks For Tour

When Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller hit the road together this summer, the good times will roll no doubt. But who will have more fun: the fans or the headliners? During their nine-city Under the Influence of Music run, the Pittsburgh boys are planning plenty of backstage fun. “Your little crew better get your little selves together, ’cause T.G.O.D. is coming,” Wiz told Mac, playfully threatening his labelmate when they both appeared on “RapFix Live” on April 25. “Let’s go, Most Dope versus Taylor Gang. It’s on,” Mac responded all smiles, pumping up his rap crew.

Wiz Khalifa Speaks On ‘Under The Influence Of Music’ Tour

Wiz Khalifa is excited to embark on a summer tour with Mac Miller — or is he? MTV News caught up with the Rolling Papers MC on the set of Maroon 5′s “Payphone” video shoot in Los Angeles, where he talked about the upcoming Under the Influence of Music Tour.

“Mac’s my man,” Wiz said, before he jokingly backtracked. “Actually, I really don’t like him like that. That’s why I usually try to stay away from him. There’s no way I could avoid him for too much longer, so they made me go on tour with him.”

Big Mac, No Pickle

IMG 0268 450x299 Big Mac, No Pickle

Over head-bopping beats, 19-year-old rapper Mac Miller cleverly breaks down the life of your average cool kid living in the U.S.A. with fun-loving indiscretion and a middle finger in the air.

Averaging at least ten million views per video on YouTube, Mac has built an immense following of suburbanite snap-back-hat-wearing teenagers who easily relate to his tunes about frozen pizza, sneakers and ditching class. His musical career started with piano lessons at the age of six, followed by a variety of other instruments before rapping and freestyling took hold of his heart. Now fresh out of high school and living life on the road, he puts it simply, “I make music about what’s going on in my life. When I was finishing up school, all the music I was making was about that. And now I’m on the road, a lot of my music is inspired by that”. Citing A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, The Beatles and even Oasis as a few of his influences and under the wing of his mentor and fellow Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa, this kid is ready to blow. Appearing on the cover of hip-hop mag XXL’s coveted ‘Freshman Issue’ earlier this year along with other emerging stars Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf and Lil’ B, Mac Miller is on his way. Currently working on his next album, recently revealed to be titled Blue Slide Park (in homage to his hometown hangout) i-D online chatted it up with the lad during his visit to Toronto…

What do you like to do aside from making music? I like to play basketball but that’s it. I like to make music, that’s all I do. So when I’m not making music I like playing basketball and eating sushi.

You’ve had a few pretty great music videos out already even before releasing a studio album. How important are music videos for you? Very important. I think it’s a great tool for fans to be able to see me and what I’m all about and also something entertaining to go along with the music and it helps express the music a lot better as well as get it out there because people are more likely to click ‘play’ and watch a video than they are to download a whole mixtape.

How do you think you’ve managed to get so many views on YouTube? I don’t know. I couldn’t tell you. We’ve been promoting my music since I was 15 years old and going hard with it so the numbers just built and grew and multiplied but I couldn’t put my finger on the exact reason.
