Jews and hip-hop. Historically, this was a combination that mostly worked behind closed doors. Jews played an important part in the development of hip-hop and rap, from Tom Silverman who founded Tommy Boy Records, and introduced the world to De La Soul, House of Pain, Naughty by Nature, Queen Latifah and many other hugely successful rappers, to Rick Rubin, one of the most highly regarded producers who has worked with the likes of the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Jay-Z and others.
But when it came to Jews on the mic, the list was small. You can count on one hand those who were successful, and three of those fingers belong to the Beastie Boys.
But recently things have changed. First there was Drake, a local Canadian boy who took the world by storm. First an actor, he quickly became one of the biggest recording artist in the world with his debut album, Thank Me Later.
And now we have Mac Miller (Malcom McCormick). Fresh out of high school, the 19 year-old rap phenomenon out of Pittsburgh has quickly built a name for himself as the biggest up-and-coming rap artist in the world. Signed to Rostrum Records, Mac’s first mixtape, titled K.I.D.S., was released in August 2010 and featured the way too addictive, “Knock Knock” and the YouTube hit, “Nikes On My Feet”, which has received over 5 million views.
Mac’s style is a throwback vibe, a mix of a Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys and De La Soul. Addictive beats, tight rhymes, and an artist who doesn’t take himself too seriously. He knows he’s young and he’s playing with it, and that’s what the fans love.
Shalom Life recently had a chance to interview Mac Miller and talk about his new album, favorite Jewish food, and making a Hanukkah song with Drake:
Mac Miller just dropped the video for “Donald Trump”, the lead song off “Best Day Ever” on Treejtv! Keep your thumbs up for the mixtape dropping next Friday!!!!
Just a few days after we announced that Mac Miller was included in our 2011 Freshman Class, XXLMag.com has learned that the Pittsburgh, PA MC have a cameo in VH1′s new series, Single Ladies, executive produced by Queen Latifah.
Mac told XXL that he is going to be playing himself in an upcoming episode, which will focus on one of the girls discovering him and trying to get him signed to a major label.
While on set in Atlanta filming, the 19-year old MC said he was uneasy at first with getting behind the camera, but has since loosened up. “I was a little nervous doing the whole acting thing,” he said, “[but] since I’m playing myself it wasn’t really hard; I just did what I would do in every situation.”
The series, which also stars Stacey Dash, is set to premiere on VH1 this July. Mac also promises several other guest appearances from other up-and-coming rappers.
Meanwhile, Miller is currently preparing to release his new free album, Best Day Ever, following up last year’s K.I.D.S. The disc is set to drop on March 11.
Before you get to hear the new verse, you got to check out the ending of his last song and party to a couple records with the Most Dope team. DEAD @ Mac rapping to DMX’s “Party Up In Here.” After, you get the first verse off “Donald Trump” for Best Day Ever. A video is set to drop in a few weeks. Look out for Best Day Ever on…nah, I won’t share.
For part two of GoodFella’s interview with Mac Miller, those spoke about: The PA area is becoming a bubbling region for new hip-hop acts, the Major differences between Highlife & Kids, what stands out the most to him when listening to “KIDS”, playing the piano, guitar & not being afraid to even sing on a track, responds to skeptics who think he doesn’t have much to rap about except “being young & smoking weed” and what we should be expecting from Mac Miller in the upcoming year.
